An unframed, unrestored, French School, oil on canvas portrait of a seated gentleman with a book, wearing a Legion of Honour medal on his lapel, by Pauline Delacroix Garnier (1863-1912), signed lower right.

Pauline Garnier and her husband, the painter Henri Eugene Delacroix, had their studio at 22 Rue de Douai in Paris.

In 1895, Pauline received the grand prize at the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors, of which she became vice-president.

Although the condition isn't great (see photos), I love the look of the gentleman - a bit grumpy or maybe just wise?

The canvas is held on by the original pins and staples, although the edges of the canvas have come away from the backing frame in many areas, which I have left as is. However, the canvas is still secure to the frame and stays up when hung up.

It still makes a great decorative, atmospheric item, even in this unrestored state.
