This is an early bentwood chair made from beech by Mundus in Czechoslovakia.
Mundus merged with the Kohn brothers in 1914 and Thonet in 1923, so this chair was made sometime before 1914 as it's marked just Mundus.
This piece has a wonderfully deep, chocolatey patina all over and the peacock feathers-like pattern on the seat is still very much visible - this chair has obviously had an easy life considering its age.
This is a superb early example of a design classic and in excellent condition.
Condition:
Excellent. All original screws and nuts, sturdy and solid, no wobbles or worm.
(Like nearly every other bentwood chair there is the usual splinter/split to the stretcher connecting the back legs and another small one on the lower backrest. However, in this case, these are extremely minor and far better than all the other bentwood chairs I've seen, even the younger chairs. I only mention them for transparency. Like I say, this chair seems to have had an easy life!)
Dimensions:
Height to top of backrest: 85cm
Diameter of seat: 36.5cm
Floor to top of seat: 47.5cm
