Although I can't see a label or stencil marking, everything about this barrister's bookcase says it's a very early Globe Wernicke, circa 1900 (apparently, the earliest models didn't have a label anyway).
Looking through early Globe Wernicke catalogues, this piece shows the same characteristics as the early 'Standard' style range, which was originally the only style the company produced:
- Solid oak throughout (not veneer).
- The distinctive curved ogee shape to the top and bottom.
- Measurements match.
- The internal sliding 'equalizer' mechanisms match the early GW style.
- Brass knobs and drawer handles.
- Oxidised metal straps are used to lock next-door stacks.
- Brass knobs and drawer handles.
- Quality of construction.
It breaks down into 4 sections - a top section, a glazed-door section, an oak door section and a bottom drawer section.
Excellent condition, super patination to the oak, brass handles and metal side straps. All parts present, no splits, just the odd ding and some blemishes to the top. Please look through the photos, zoom in, and ask any questions.
